Garden plans

Vermont just got more snow, snow, snow, snow, snow, and I'm thinking about my garden. So I am not a green thumb. I have given up on starting things from seed, except maybe for radishes. My current garden (like my current house) is the perfect size because it is small and easy to clean up in about 20 minutes. At the same time, being the crazy skinflint I am, I want to pack in as much edible stuff as I can handle in an attempt to save a bit of money. Here's what I'm thinking:

Decorative plants for the front of the house:

Marigolds
Licorice plant
Pansies
Nasturtiums (my favorite!)

For the sunny side garden, our prime Veggie Spot:

tomatoes
more tomatoes
mesclun
summer squash

Annuals for the herb garden:

parsley
basil (LOTS)
cilantro

What are you planning? Also, ever tried one of those upside-down tomato planters?

my mom always plants beans. i'm not sure how you feel about beans...as you did take care of my mother's garden once..but fresh beans out of the garden, pickled, and even frozen cannot be beaten by anything. unless they're wicked cheap at the fahmah's mahket. otherwise, your garden sounds perfect.
oh-we have great luck with nepeta--"catmint" it's alot like lavender and grows quick and pretty..second bloom in late july too. it has a tiny purple flower--might look pretty against the marigolds and nasturtium.
cheers thanks alot

I tried beans the last 2 years (same packet actually since we have so little space, used it twice) and I didn't like that variety so I'm beanshy now. They were too chewy and "beany." They were pole beans, maybe a bush bean (is that a thing?) would be better. Thanks for the catmint tip too! Sounds v. pretty!
