Whole30 Day 1, Going Paleo

What a beautiful day we had this Labor Day. We went to the Guilford Fair in the morning and our first-grader loved the rides and downed a cheeseburger. Meanwhile, my eating companion and I were on Day 1 of our experiment to "go paleo" for the next 30 days.

Breakfast: Black coffee (Agh!), avocado, fried egg, sweet potato
Snack at the fair: seaweed

Snack at the fair: Apple

Lunch: Salad with avocado, blueberries, and sunflower seeds

Emergency 4:30 snack: chicken fried in ghee with cooked acorn squash

Dinner: Mushroom Spinach Frittata
Day 1 reflections: This was a hard day emotionally but not because of food--our children are both having frequent tantrums lately and it's extremely exhausting. Also we just learned that we lost someone close, which is a shock. As for food, I learned that the hours of 11am and 4pm are when I start to get edgy and anxious and HAVE to have something just to maintain thought processes. The apple and small chicken fry-up did the trick today, but when I'm at work for the rest of the week I'll need to have supplies ready for these bumpy bits. The Whole30 recommends 3 daily meals with no snacks, but my body doesn't really work that way. I'll try. I'm also a little worried that eating sweet potatoes every day for the next month (speaking figuratively) will be boring. Basically food is becoming fuel rather than free choice, and that is totally foreign to me (as to anyone I'm sure). It's still early days of course!

You might want to get some sliced turkey and ham from the deli and add it to your salad and eat it as a snack. Plus hard-boiled eggs. Just a thought.

Thanks, those are good ideas! I don't think ham is "compliant" because it's made with sugar. Either that or sulfites. Hard-boiled eggs would be good.
